In modern grain storage management, temperature monitoring plays a critical role in maintaining safe storage conditions. Changes in grain temperature may indicate heat accumulation, moisture migration, insect activity, poor aeration, or other developing storage problems. For this reason, reliable temperature measurement is one of the most basic and practical tools used in grain warehouses and silos.
To provide a more flexible solution for daily inspection, field testing, and temperature cable maintenance, the ZS-ABB Multi-Point Temperature and Humidity Handheld Meter, Version 2.0, is designed as a portable device that can directly connect to temperature sensing cables and display measurement data on site.
Compared with a permanently installed temperature acquisition unit, a handheld meter offers a different kind of flexibility. It can be carried from warehouse to warehouse, connected only when measurements are needed, and used not only for temperature checking but also for cable identification, sensor point numbering, troubleshooting, and maintenance.
This makes the ZS-ABB especially useful for small grain storage facilities, temporary storage sites, farms, feed storage facilities, maintenance teams, and technicians responsible for grain temperature monitoring systems.
1. Key Features & High Performance
The ZS-ABB handheld temperature meter integrates six practical functions into one portable device. These functions cover daily temperature inspection, data review, long-distance measurement, cable management, sensor point management, and device configuration, making it suitable for both routine grain monitoring and field maintenance.

1. Temp Check
The Temp Check function is used for routine temperature measurement.
After connecting the handheld meter to the temperature sensing cable, the operator can directly read the temperature data from multiple sensing points. The display also shows the corresponding cable number and point or layer number, making it easier to identify the exact measuring position.
This function is especially suitable for daily inspection in small grain warehouses, silos, farms, and temporary storage facilities.
2. Data View
The Data View function allows previously stored inspection records to be reviewed directly on the handheld device.
The ZS-ABB supports up to 32 stored measurement records, helping operators compare temperature data from different inspection times without requiring an external computer or monitoring terminal.
This is useful for routine inspection records, maintenance checks, and simple temperature trend comparison.
3. Dist Check
The Dist Check function is designed for long-distance or unstable temperature cable detection.
When a cable is difficult to read under normal measurement mode, or when abnormal readings appear, the long-distance detection mode uses a slower measurement method to improve reading stability.
This function is particularly useful when checking long temperature cables, troubleshooting unstable sensor signals, or verifying cables during maintenance.
4. Cable Edit
The Cable Edit function allows users to modify the identification number of a temperature cable directly from the handheld meter.
For example, in a storage site with three grain warehouses and three temperature cables in each warehouse, the cables can be organized as:
Warehouse 1: Cable 1–3
Warehouse 2: Cable 4–6
Warehouse 3: Cable 7–9
A clear cable numbering system makes daily inspection, maintenance records, and fault location much easier.
5. Layer Edit
The Layer Edit function allows the operator to modify the number of individual sensing points on a temperature cable.
For example, if one temperature cable contains five sensing points, the points can be numbered from bottom to top as:
Point 1 → Point 2 → Point 3 → Point 4 → Point 5
With this arrangement, if the system displays an abnormal value at Cable 3 / Point 4, the operator can immediately identify which cable and which physical measuring position requires inspection.
This function is especially useful during cable installation, commissioning, replacement, and maintenance.
6. System Setting
The System Setting menu is used to configure the basic operating parameters of the handheld meter.
Users can adjust settings such as system time and screen brightness according to actual operating requirements. This helps improve usability in different working environments and can also reduce unnecessary battery consumption.
Together, these six functions make the ZS-ABB more than a simple portable temperature reader. It can be used for temperature measurement, historical data review, long-distance cable testing, cable numbering, sensor point management, and field maintenance, providing a practical all-in-one tool for grain storage temperature monitoring.
3. An Indispensable Tool for Cable Repair and Troubleshooting
The value of a handheld temperature meter becomes even more obvious during system maintenance.
In a large grain temperature monitoring system, a problem may appear as a missing temperature point, unstable reading, abnormal temperature value, or a complete cable communication failure.
But the abnormal reading displayed by the monitoring system does not always tell the technician exactly where the problem is located.
The possible cause may be:
- The temperature cable itself
- One individual sensor
- A loose connection
- A damaged junction
- The acquisition channel
- Field wiring
- Communication wiring
- Power supply conditions
A handheld temperature meter helps technicians separate these possibilities.

Directly Test the Suspected Cable
Suppose the monitoring system indicates that Cable No. 5 is abnormal.
Instead of immediately replacing the cable, the technician can disconnect it from the acquisition system and connect it directly to the ZS-ABB handheld meter.
Two situations may then occur.
If all temperature points are displayed normally on the handheld meter, the sensing cable itself is probably operating correctly, and the technician can continue checking the acquisition equipment, field wiring, or communication channel.
If the same point still cannot be detected by the handheld meter, the problem is more likely to be related to the cable, sensor, or cable connection.
This direct testing method greatly simplifies troubleshooting.
Rather than checking the entire system at once, technicians can isolate one part of the system and test it independently.
Useful for Installation and Commissioning
The handheld meter is also valuable before a temperature cable is installed.
During factory production or on-site installation, technicians can connect each cable to the instrument and verify:
- Whether all sensors can be detected
- Whether temperatures are being read correctly
- Whether cable numbers are correct
- Whether point numbers are correct
- Whether the cable can communicate over the required distance
This helps identify problems before the cable is lowered into grain, installed inside a silo, or connected permanently to the monitoring system.
In practice, troubleshooting a cable before installation is usually much easier than repairing it afterward.
