Grain Conditioning: Essential for Safe Storage and Quality Preservation
Grain conditioning is a vital process that extends the storage life of grains while minimizing spoilage and quality loss. Proper conditioning, combined with reliable temperature monitoring, forms the foundation of safe and efficient grain storage.
Key Grain Conditioning Practices
In-Bin Natural Air Drying
Modern silos equipped with efficient ventilation systems allow for successful grain drying using natural airflow, with optional supplemental heat. Natural air drying within silos is considered the highest quality and most energy-efficient method for preserving grain. However, to achieve uniform drying, avoid over- or under-drying, and save energy, it is essential to adopt intelligent fan control strategies.
High-Temperature Grain Drying
High-temperature drying, followed by cooling (aeration), is a common practice for safe storage. During this process, grain is typically dried to a moisture content 2-3% higher than the safe storage target, then transferred to a tempering bin for slow aeration and cooling.

Grain Aeration
Aeration reduces grain temperature, thereby enhancing storage safety and preventing mold or insect infestation. Once grains reach the target moisture level, rapid and even cooling to around 1.7°C to 4.4°C (35°F to 40°F) is recommended for winter storage. Importantly, freezing grain should be avoided to prevent condensation issues in warmer seasons.
Grain Rehydration
In cases where crops such as soybeans or canola are harvested with moisture content 2-3% below acceptable levels, controlled rehydration may be necessary. While physically adding water to grains is illegal and considered adulteration, legally acceptable methods involve introducing naturally moist air into silos to safely adjust moisture levels.

Temperature Monitoring: The Backbone of Grain Conditioning
Effective grain conditioning is inseparable from precise temperature monitoring. At Zhaosui Temperature Cable, we provide advanced grain temperature monitoring solutions that enable real-time detection of storage conditions, ensuring your conditioning efforts deliver maximum results.
Our stainless steel armored temperature cables and replaceable-core temperature cables are designed to withstand harsh silo environments and provide accurate, long-term temperature data. By integrating temperature monitoring with your ventilation and drying systems, you can:
Detect hotspots or moisture build-up early
Optimize fan and aeration system operation
