Smart Grain Depot Transformation Accelerates Under China's 14th Five-Year Plan

Temperature Monitoring Systems Become a Critical Node in Ensuring Food Security

As China advances into the core period of its 14th Five-Year Plan, the intelligent transformation of the national grain reserve system is rapidly accelerating. Among the various innovations being implemented, temperature monitoring systems have emerged as a key technology for ensuring safe, efficient, and long-term grain storage.

A flagship example of this modernization effort is the Xiang'an Grain Depot Phase III Project, located in Neicuo Town, Xiang'an District, Xiamen. The site covers nearly 80,000 square meters, with a built-up area of about 33,400 square meters. The project includes:

  • 30 shallow circular silos for grain storage
  • 4 oil storage tanks for edible oil
  • Comprehensive infrastructure including roads, power, and monitoring systems

Once completed, the facility will provide 220,000 tons of grain storage capacity and 2,000 tons of edible oil reserves, significantly strengthening the city's grain supply security. The project is scheduled for completion and commissioning in September 2026.

Intelligent Temperature Monitoring at the Core

A central feature of this smart depot is its wireless temperature monitoring system, designed to provide real-time surveillance of grain conditions. The system works by placing sensors deep inside the grain piles, automatically measuring and transmitting temperature and humidity data to a central platform.

Key benefits include:

1

Real-time detection of abnormal temperature rise due to mold or insect activity

2

Automated alerts for timely intervention

3

Reduced need for manual inspections and improved data accuracy

4

Historical data analysis for predictive maintenance and storage optimization

By shifting from manual to automated, from isolated to connected, this system marks a key step in the digitalization of grain storage operations.

Full Automation Enhances Operational Efficiency

Beyond temperature monitoring, the Xiang'an depot integrates automated logistics technologies, such as:

1

Unmanned handling systems for grain intake and discharge

2

Automated weighing stations for vehicle control

3

Digital dashboards for operational coordination

These features not only improve precision and speed but also reduce human error, labor costs, and operational risks-especially important during peak harvest and emergency deployment periods.

A Scalable Model for National Food Security

The Xiang'an Grain Depot represents a new model for intelligent food reserve infrastructure in China. As similar projects are deployed across the country, smart temperature systems and automation are expected to become standard in the next generation of grain depots.

With ongoing support from national policies and investments in digital agriculture, China's grain storage capabilities are being upgraded for the challenges of the future-resilient, data-driven, and secure.
