Overview
Temperature is one of the most important parameters in tank storage and industrial process monitoring. Whether the tank contains water, edible oil, fuel, thermal storage liquid or other materials, temperature changes can directly affect product quality, storage safety, equipment efficiency and operating costs.
A tank temperature sensor is designed to continuously measure temperature inside a storage tank and transmit the data to a local controller, data acquisition unit, PLC or remote monitoring system.
For large or deep tanks, measuring temperature at only one position is often insufficient. Temperature stratification can occur between the top, middle and bottom of the tank. For this reason, a multi-point tank temperature sensor cable provides a more complete picture of the internal temperature distribution.
This article explains the working principle, structure, installation methods and typical applications of tank temperature sensors, with particular focus on stainless steel multi-point temperature monitoring cables.

What Is a Tank Temperature Sensor?
A tank temperature sensor is an industrial temperature measuring device installed inside or around a storage tank to detect the temperature of the stored medium.
Depending on the application, it may be designed for:
- Water tanks
- Oil storage tanks
- Edible oil tanks
- Fuel tanks
- Thermal energy storage tanks
- Chilled water tanks
- Industrial process tanks
- Large vertical storage vessels
Traditional temperature monitoring systems often use a single temperature probe. Although this method is suitable for small tanks, it may not accurately represent the temperature distribution inside a large tank.
A multi-point temperature sensor cable solves this problem by installing several digital temperature sensing elements along one cable. Different measuring points can therefore monitor different depths simultaneously.
For example, one 20-meter sensor cable may contain multiple temperature sensors positioned at predetermined intervals. The monitoring system can then display temperature values from the upper, middle and lower sections of the tank individually.
Why Is Multi-Point Temperature Monitoring Important?
Temperature inside a tank is rarely completely uniform.
Differences in liquid density, external environmental temperature, heating, cooling, circulation and tank structure can create temperature stratification.
For example, the temperature near the tank surface may be significantly different from the temperature near the bottom.
A single-point sensor may report:
Top temperature: 25°C
However, the actual tank condition could be:
- Upper layer: 25°C
- Middle layer: 20°C
- Lower layer: 16°C
If only one sensor is used, the monitoring system may fail
A multi-point tank temperature monitoring system provides temperature information at several vertical positions, helping operators understand the real thermal condition of the tank.
This is particularly useful in large storage tanks and thermal storage applications.

How Does a Tank Temperature Sensor Work?
The working principle of a tank temperature sensor depends on the sensing technology used.
Common industrial temperature measurement technologies include:
- RTD sensors
- Thermistors
- Thermocouples
- Digital temperature sensors
For long multi-point temperature cables, digital temperature sensing technology offers several advantages.
Each sensor is installed at a predetermined location inside the cable and has its own identification information. The data acquisition unit communicates with the sensors and reads the temperature of each measuring point.
A typical monitoring process is:

The sensors first convert temperature into electrical or digital information. The acquisition unit then collects the data and transfers it to a display, computer or remote monitoring platform.
With a digital multi-point system, multiple sensing points can operate through a common communication cable, reducing the number of individual wires required inside the tank.

Structure of a Multi-Point Tank Temperature Sensor Cable
A reliable tank temperature sensor must operate for long periods in environments involving moisture, immersion, corrosion and mechanical stress.
For this reason, the mechanical structure of the temperature cable is just as important as the sensing element.
A typical stainless steel tank temperature sensor cable contains several protective layers.
1. 304 Stainless Steel Outer Protection

The external layer can use a 304 stainless steel flexible protective sheath.
Compared with ordinary plastic cable jackets, stainless steel provides better mechanical protection and corrosion resistance.
The metal protective structure can help protect internal conductors and sensors from:
- Mechanical impact
- Pulling force
- Tank installation stress
- Water exposure
- Oil exposure
- Long-term industrial use
For water tanks and many industrial liquid storage applications, stainless steel is particularly suitable because it combines good corrosion resistance with mechanical strength.
2. Waterproof Internal Sensor Core

Inside the stainless steel protective sheath is the temperature sensing core.
The internal structure can be completely sealed and waterproofed to protect temperature sensors and conductors from moisture penetration.
For applications requiring continuous immersion, both the protective sheath and the sensor core should provide reliable waterproof performance.
A properly designed sensor cable can reach IP68-level waterproof protection, allowing the sensing section to remain immersed in liquid during operation.
3. Multiple Temperature Sensors
One of the most important characteristics of a multi-point cable is the ability to install multiple temperature sensors along a single cable.
The sensor spacing can be customized according to tank dimensions.
For example:
- 1 meter between sensors
- 2 meters between sensors
- Different spacing at different positions
For large tank projects, the total cable length and number of measuring points can also be customized.
A multi-point design allows operators to obtain a temperature profile rather than a single temperature value.
4. Replaceable Sensor Core Design

Maintenance is an important consideration for permanently installed tank monitoring systems.
Some temperature monitoring cables use a replaceable internal sensor core.
If an internal sensing element is damaged, the sensor core can be removed and replaced without completely removing the external stainless steel protective structure from the tank.
This design provides several benefits:
- Easier maintenance
- Reduced replacement costs
- Less tank-side disassembly
- Shorter maintenance downtime
- Longer service life of the external protective structure
This is especially valuable when cables are installed inside large tanks where complete removal can be difficult.
5.Counterweight iron

Vertical tank temperature cables often require a bottom weight.
The weight keeps the temperature cable hanging vertically inside the tank and helps maintain the correct sensor position.
A threaded connection between the cable and weight can simplify installation and maintenance.
